When you Educate a Girl you Educate a Village
Dear Friend,
It has been shown time and again that investing in the education of girls in rural India will help deliver a huge return for economic growth, political participation, and improvement in women’s health, smaller and more sustainable families, and disease prevention. Uttar Pradesh is one of the worst performing states in India where 60% of the girls are illiterate; and 82% of the girls enrolled in the first standard dropout before they are 15 years old. The high attrition rate is attributed to restriction in mobility, lack of sanitation at schools, having to work for family income, child marriage and little value attached to girl’s education.
Which is why Shobhna and I are both terribly excited about starting our school “SATYA RAM GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL” in November of this year with sixteen (16) five year old orphaned and or underprivileged girls. Each year our school will progress arithmetically by 16 girls, the first KG group will move up to the first grade and 16 new girls will be welcomed to Kindergarten. By 2028 we will have a full complement of 208 girls in a K-12 facility.
Since Nov 2014, we have built 5240 square feet of ground floor of a building that is fully functional for 16 girls comprising a furnished dormitory, class room, playroom, computer and science lab, washroom, dining hall, kitchen, store room, admin office and 144 square feet of living quarters for ourselves. The washroom has 4 sinks, 4 toilets and 3 showers. The kitchen is fully functional with a gas cooktop, refrigerator and oven. We will construct additional floors, buildings and facilities each year for the next 10 years. We have constructed a greenhouse (200 sq. meters in area) to grow organic fresh vegetables, herbs and flowers to become self-sustainable. We are building solar hot water heaters, harvesting rain water and using solar energy powered converters to back up our electrical system.
Our Private Foundation, Lala Beejraj Shikchha Canada Trust, is registered with Canada Revenue Agency as a charitable private foundation to advance and provide free education, free board and lodging, and free health care to girls from villages in the district of Lakhimpur-Kheri, state of Uttar Pradesh, in India.
We are seeking your help and assistance in making Satya Ram Girls’ High School an educational model that is sustainable, scalable and replicable for others to emulate in India. In this venture, we will take our first steps together to provide young girls with the tools that will allow them to actively participate in civic life, make informed decisions, exercise their rights and become strong advocates for community improvement.
We are writing to you with the hope that you will be able to help us financially as we grow our school under the auspices of our trust.
You may choose to sponsor a Girl at A Dollar a Day or make a Donation to help Build our school: Sponsoring a girl for a year at $365 will directly go towards the cost to educate, feed, clothe, provide health care and build up a corpus fund for the girl; alternately, your donation will be used towards building additional floors and facilities in our school.
Yours Sincerely,
Sanjiv Nundy
